Thermite
Tightly compacted, hermetically sealed thermite in steel cylinders offers a highly efficient and controllable method for melting low-melt-point alloys in fluid-filled well environments.
isol8’s Engineered Thermite Reaction Heaters – Safe, Controllable, Effective & Reliable
Safe
API-RP67 compliant
Two independent fail-safe barriers to prevent initiation
isol8’s initiation device includes independent pressure and temperature switches that can be set to ensure thermite ignition cannot occur outside of the wellbore, compliant with API RP 67.
Exceptionally high ignition temperature
isol8’s proprietary thermite heater recipe has an exceptionally high ignition temperature, which serves as a built-in safety feature. Our thermite requires an external ignition source capable of reaching temperatures above 1,832°F (1,000°C), reducing the risk of accidental activation during handling and deployment. isol8’s heater recipes pass the UN screening test (5 minutes, 1000 °C ignition / V-block test) demonstrating that the thermite is NOT readily combustible.
Proprietary ingredients mitigate hydrogen generation when wet
Isol8’s thermite passes the UN Dangerous Goods water reactivity test, producing less than 1 litre of flammable gas, per kg, per hour.
Controllable, effective & reliable
- The thermite heaters can be surface, timer or motion activated. They can be deployed on slickline, digital slickline, electric wireline or pipe.
- No surface power is required to initiate the reaction. isol8’s dual initiation system provides redundancy and assured reliability.
Top-Down, Bottom-Up or Simultaneous Top-Down/Bottom-Up
isol8’s high expansion, bead deployment tool reacts from the bottom-up. The cast on heater toolstrings typically operate from the top-down. However, isol8 can also offer simultaneous bottom-up/top-down.
Once ignited, the thermite reaction propagates in a slow and controlled manner sustaining the temperatures required to reliably liquefy low-melting-point alloys used in downhole applications. The energy density of thermite is another significant benefit. isol8’s proprietary exothermic recipe releases heat with no gaseous by products, ensuring efficient energy utilization within the confined space of a wellbore. This high energy efficiency allows precise, localized heating without the need for surface power, making it ideal for remote or deep-well operations. Overall, hermetically sealed thermite cylinders provide a safe, effective, and reliable solution for downhole alloy melting in challenging well conditions.
