Alloy Barrier Section Milled Plug (P&A)
An alloy barrier in a section milled casing can provide a superior, gas tight seal for P&A and slot recovery applications
Forming an alloy barrier in a section-milled casing window offers a robust method for zonal isolation. A bridge plug or inflatable packer is first set at the base of the milled section to provide a foundation for the alloy. Alloy beads are then dispensed around a central thermite heater, ensuring the heater remains at maximum diameter to generate sufficient radial heat for uniform alloy melting. This configuration allows the alloy to flow and fill the section-milled geometry. After full melt, the heater is withdrawn from the molten alloy, leaving behind a solid, gas-tight metal barrier.
